Beam Me Up Scotty!!!!

The Birth of Silicon Valley

and…..what kind of memory and RAM does you iPhone have?

The first Apollo flight computer was one of the first purpose-built computing systems based on integrated circuits, with the first edition featuring 4,000 single 3-input NOR logic gates fabricated by Fairchild Semiconductor.  By the time of the first moon landing, the AGC had 5,600 integrated circuits and the RAM had been upped from 1K to much more comforting 2K.  Another example of how the computing industry has exploded since Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon, NASA reckoned it its 1976 edition of Spinoff magazine that the semiconductor industry would take in a cool $5 billion from 1963 to 1982, thanks in no small part to the development of computers for space travel.  Today, that’s a couple of weeks worth of sales for Intel alone.

If you want to see some really cool technology look at what Cisco is doing in an area that we have all waited for….beam me up Scotty.
