South Carolina Patent Awards 

South Carolina companies and South Carolina inventors were awarded 578 new patents for 2009.  The results just released from the South Carolina Technology Alliance reflect a increase over the past two years.  Our best years were 2002 with 711 new patents. 

Many of the patents awarded in South Carolina go to companies and the others are awarded to individual inventors and entrepreneurs.  "This years patents overall were more technology and software related than in the last several years", said Tom Persons, President & CEO for the South Carolina Technology Alliance.   We have been tracking our states new patent awards since 2000.  The quality of the patents for our state have most definitely improved over the years.  With the USC, Clemson, MUSC and South Carolina State increased efforts in this area and the continued flow of research dollars thur the South Carolina Center of Excellence our state should help us continue this trend.
